Mai Khao

Mai Khao District, Phuket

Mai Khao is a sub-district (tambon) occupying the northernmost part of Phuket Island, from the Sarasin Bridge south to Nai Yang Beach. The area encompasses Phuket’s longest stretch of undeveloped beach (also called Mai Khao Beach, 17 km), Phuket International Airport, and a national park section where leatherback and olive ridley sea turtles nest between November and February. Mai Khao is the quiet end of Phuket — a deliberate contrast to Patong and Kata further south.

Getting to Mai Khao

Mai Khao is the closest Phuket sub-district to Khao Lak (across the Sarasin Bridge on the Phang Nga mainland). Private transfers from Khao Lak to Mai Khao start from ฿1,650 one-way. From Phuket Airport — which is within the Mai Khao district itself — luxury resort shuttles serve the beach hotels.
