Khao Sok is open year-round and accessible in both seasons — but the experience is very different depending on when you go. Here is the practical guide.

Dry season: November to April

This is the main visitor window. Rainfall is minimal, temperatures hover around 28–32 °C, and river levels are manageable for canoeing. The jungle is still lush (Khao Sok receives rain year-round from the Gulf of Thailand side), but the downpours are short and predictable rather than persistent. February to April gives the clearest skies and coolest mornings — the best window for the lake.

Green season: May to October

The southwest monsoon brings heavier, longer rain from around May. The jungle turns a deeper, more vivid green and crowds drop noticeably. Day trips still run — the jungle holds up fine in light rain and the wildlife can actually be more active. The risk is multi-hour downpours that make the Sok River canoe trip wetter than expected and reduce lake visibility. September and October see the heaviest rainfall; if flexibility matters, keep these months for somewhere drier.

Cheow Lan Lake: the season within the season

The lake is accessible year-round, but November to March is the sweet spot. Water levels are lower, revealing more of the dramatic cliff bases, and early-morning mist sits on the surface before burning off — the scene that features in every Khao Sok photograph. By May, higher water and overcast skies reduce the drama. The floating bungalows fill up in December–January; book at least two weeks ahead.

How this affects your day trip from Khao Lak

Our Khao Sok day trip (jungle + elephant + canoe) runs comfortably throughout the dry season and on most days in the green season. The lake day trip is best booked November to April for the clearest water and the mist photography window. A private Khao Lak to Khao Sok transfer takes about 1 hour 15 minutes from central Khao Lak.
