The Phi Phi Islands — Maya Bay, towering limestone cliffs and some of the most photographed water in Thailand — sit south of Khao Lak in Krabi province. They’re further than the Similans or Phang Nga Bay, but very much doable as a day trip from Khao Lak. Here’s everything you need to know.

Phi Phi is a longer day — plan for it

Phi Phi lies between Phuket and Krabi, so from Khao Lak you have a road transfer south followed by a speedboat across open water. It’s an early start and a full day — but the payoff is Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave and the best snorkeling stops in the southern Andaman. Doing it yourself means a transfer to a Phuket or Krabi pier, then finding a boat; a guided trip removes all of that.

The simplest way from Khao Lak

Our Phi Phi Islands day trip from Khao Lak handles the whole chain — hotel pickup, the transfer to the pier, the speedboat, park fees, lunch and a guide — so you travel down, spend the day on the water, and come back without organising a single connection yourself. Maximum 12 guests per speedboat.

What you’ll see at Phi Phi

Maya Bay — the sheltered bay on Koh Phi Phi Ley made famous by The Beach (2000). The bay reopened to controlled visitor numbers in 2022 after a four-year environmental closure. Snorkeling inside is limited to protect coral recovery; swimming in the cove is permitted.

Pileh Lagoon — a completely enclosed emerald lagoon ringed by 100-metre limestone walls. Reachable only by longtail or kayak through a narrow gap in the rock. Calm, clear water and extraordinary reflected light.

Viking Cave — prehistoric cave paintings and the site of Thailand’s edible birds-nest harvesting industry. Visible from the boat but not accessible to tourists.

Snorkeling reefs — stops at Shark Point (leopard sharks on the sand) and Hin Klang reef (hard coral, parrotfish, moray eels). Masks and fins supplied.

Best time of year for Phi Phi from Khao Lak

November to April is optimal — the Andaman Sea is calm, visibility underwater reaches 15–20 metres, and the road south is clear. May to October is monsoon season: some days are still fine, but rough open-ocean conditions mean the Phi Phi speedboat runs fewer days per week. In shoulder months (October, May), confirm departure availability when booking. The Similan Islands close 1 May to 31 October; the Phi Phi run is year-round weather permitting.

Prefer something closer?

If a long travel day isn’t for you, the Similan Islands (closer, clearer water, shorter boat ride) and James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay (just up the coast, no long speedboat) are both excellent shorter days from Khao Lak.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go to Phi Phi from Khao Lak independently? Yes — book a private transfer south to Rassada Pier in Phuket (or Ao Nang Krabi), then buy a day-tour boat ticket at the pier (฿1,200–1,800/person for the boat alone, excluding transfers and pier fees). The all-in tour is usually more convenient and comparable in total cost once you add the transfer each way.

How long is the speedboat ride to Phi Phi? From Rassada Pier (Phuket) to Phi Phi Don is approximately 45 minutes by speedboat. From Ao Por Grand Marina (Phang Nga) it’s slightly longer. Swell in May–October can extend this to 60+ minutes.

Is Maya Bay open in 2025/2026? Yes. Maya Bay reopened in January 2022 after its environmental closure. Entry is now managed — boats anchor in the bay for a set time (30–45 minutes) before rotating out. Visitor caps are in place. Our tour schedules around optimal timing to minimise crowds.

Can I stay overnight at Phi Phi from Khao Lak? Not on this day trip. If you want an overnight on Koh Phi Phi Don, arrange your Khao Lak to Phuket transfer separately, then take the ferry from Rassada Pier — ferries run morning and afternoon. We can arrange the transfer portion: Khao Lak private transfer.
