Canoeing the Little Amazon: What the Paddle Is Really Like
The waterway everyone calls the Little Amazon is the Phraya Wang mangrove canal, in Takua Pa District roughly 45 minutes north of Khao Lak. Mangrove and banyan close over the channel in a low green canopy, and on a still day the trees mirror so cleanly in the dark water that it is hard to tell where the canal ends and the reflection begins. That mirror is the photograph people come for.
You spend about 45 to 60 minutes on the water. The river is calm and sheltered, and there is nothing to learn before you set off, because your guide does the paddling from the stern the whole way. That leaves your hands free for a camera and your eyes on the branches. Children from around age five are comfortable in the boat. There is no swimming and no rapids.

The Indian Ocean Tsunami on December 26, 2004, brought Khao Lak and the surrounding region into spotlight on the world stage, albeit for tragic reasons. In the days that followed, thousands of locals and tourists were still missing, some swept out to sea, others entombed in mud and debris. Elephants worked side-by-side with locals to remove debris to rescue people buried alive and recover the bodies of loved ones. Many were never found. We will take you to one of the memorials near Takua Pa where your guide will offer a local perspective on one of the worst tragedies in recorded history.
When evening comes, the local markets offer another window into Phang Nga culture. Bang Niang Market — a popular open-air night market along Phetkasem Road — sells grilled food, handmade crafts, and seasonal fruit four evenings a week, just a short drive from the Baan Nam Khem memorial.

Takua Pa or Takuapa? Finding the Old Town
You will see the name written both ways. Takua Pa and Takuapa are the same district in Phang Nga province — the two-word form is the standard transliteration, while the one-word Takuapa is what tends to appear on signage, on maps and in older guidebooks. Searching for either brings you to the same place, and the Little Amazon sits in the same district.
Takua Pa Old Town is a short Sino-Portuguese streetscape of coloured shophouses, temples and market stalls rather than a large historic quarter, and it is quieter and more lived-in than Phuket Old Town. It is also easy to drive straight past the turning. The lane comes alive on Sunday, when the walking street fills with food stalls; on other days the draw is the architecture, the shrines and the coffee shops rather than the crowds.
Pairing the two in one morning works because the canal rewards an early start — soft light, active wildlife, still water — and the old town is at its best once the day has warmed up and the shutters are open.

Sino-Portuguese architecture lines the streets, and ancient traditions and beliefs are evident on every corner and within the temples in and around Takua Pa Old Town. Temples of different faiths have been constructed over the years, allowing the historical and modern-day peoples places to worship their many gods and deities. There is plenty of time on your guided tour of the Old Town to visit the temples, shop for souvenirs, and sample the wide gamut of local cuisine. The temples are active places of worship, so please remember when entering temples to do so respectfully. Evidence of the severity of the wave’s destruction still haunts the western coastal regions of Thailand to this day. Surviving friends and families of the victims regularly visit the memorial in remembrance of their lost loved ones, so please keep that in mind when selecting the subjects of your photos. Please remember to always be respectful, for many of them have suffered greatly. Here are a few general rules and guidelines when visiting any sacred area or temple in Thailand. If you wish to enter any temples, temple grounds, or areas held sacred by the locals, please remember to dress accordingly. Your clothing should not be too revealing and must cover your shoulders and knees. Instead of wearing trousers, long dresses and skirts, or restrictive shirts and blouses, a sarong can worn to cover up in a pinch. Never walk in front of people when they are in the act of prayer, and always remember to remove your footwear and hats before entering any temple, shrine, or stepping onto a monument platform.
