Khao Lak and Phuket are about 80 km apart on the Andaman coast. Both are popular, both have beautiful beaches \u2014 but they attract very different types of traveller. Here is the honest comparison.<\/p>
Phuket is an international resort island with everything from rooftop bars to Michelin-star restaurants and shopping malls; Khao Lak is a quieter mainland beach strip with no nightlife to speak of, longer beaches, and direct access to Thailand’s best day-trip destinations.<\/p>
Khao Lak’s beaches \u2014 Bang Niang, Khuk Khak, Nang Thong, Bang Sak \u2014 are long, wide and largely uncrowded even in peak season. The sand is pale and the water is calm from November to April. Phuket’s most famous beaches (Patong, Kata, Karon) are livelier, backed by bars and beach clubs, and get very busy in December and January.
